Default Naniwa 12k not getting vintage razor sharp enough

I am looking to sharpen a vintage blade. It is sharp enough to shave but not as super sharp. I have stropped it, stropped it on green chrom pasted strop, and tried 10,20,30,40 strokes per side on my naniwa 12k.

It still isn't sharp enough. I believe I may need to try a coarser stone. Plus there are 1-2 microscopic chips near the front of the blade.

    I own the following stones.
    Bester 1200
    King 4000
    Naniwa 12000.

I like the Naniwa because it is splash and go and comes on a stand.

Any suggestions on adding another stone?

Also any suggestions on getting this thing sharpened would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Hi joepa, I use my 12K specifically as a polishing stone...it refines an already shave ready edge. Although you'll find hundreds of posts on touching up an already sharp blade, I always drop to an 8K for just a few light laps before finishing with a few kisses on the 12K.

My concern in your situation would be the chips, that sounds like a job for your 1200 stone...no point in refining your edge until it's shave ready. You sound like you have a pretty good setup, my only suggestion to fill a hole would be an 8K.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thats what I was thinking. I could go 1200,4000,8000,12000,strop.

As with everything when it come to progression, you don't want too big of steps. To ask your 12000 to polish out 4000 scratches is a big task and asking a lot of that stone. It will take considerable effort. It is faster and easier and nicer to your razor to add the 8000 in the middle. I know the other guys already said it, just thought a why might be handy.

A Naniwa 8k or the 3/8 combo choice is yours would make life easy

However just to be honest, it is not "Needed"

Those videos are great. I've watched them a few times. Some things are amazing, like watching someone who is really good at a task, it just never gets old.
