This is a tomae strata stone, what I usually call a iro (color) tomae. These iro tomae are often very nice stones to use, they slurry up with a diamond plate to create a butter smooth paste that you have to add a touch of water to often. Stones of this color came from the shallower tomae strata and get their colors from several sources: oxidation, and water soluable alternate minerals. Also these semi soft stones have not been so affected by any heat or pressure like the deep strats stones have. It should be a splendid stone to use, looks like a hand held hone size and shape.

    Thank you very much!

As far as I know the japanese for this iro tomae is 色物 or 戸前 色物

And now I have found the stone looking like my.
    Here it is 菖蒲谷・色物 :
    Natural whetstone Shoubudani Tomae

And here it is one more: http://www4.ocn.ne.jp/~kanetake/syoubu.html

The only difference is the hardness. My is substantially harder.

As for slurry my iromono performs very well with slurry removing steel much faster.
