Which King 1k does gssixguns recommend??
I can't seem to find a post to a thread where Glenn recommended which King 1K on Amazon and there are several like:
King 1000 Grit Whetstone with Plastic Base : Amazon.com : Kitchen & Dining
If someone remembers or could point the way, I seem to have broken my abstention from ebay
Pretty good excersize in self-control IMO

I believe the one you have linked is the same just mounted on a base.
It is just Whisker Whacking

Very good of you, pfries. I don't know what I'm going to be facing(though I didn't see any cracks or chips), but I'd rather have the big hammer available than being in want and waitng another 3-5 days.
I've also decided to grab a 3/8k Nani combo to join the 12k.
I'm going to use the less is more approach. Check HHT and condition of the edge. From what I can see, I think I'll be needing the 8K at a minimum. Good thing I already have a Nagura to broaden the use of the stones. Glenn<--
Note about ebay. I have never seen such voluminous piles of crap in one place before. Thank goodness for SRP, the SRP db, the SRP avoid list, etc.

Looks like size of the stone makes the difference in price. Is the 8x2-3/4 worth the extra $$$?

Unless you really start working on blades the one you linked will last you a lifetime with proper care.
Beyond that some like the base and some don't?
Just don't forget to lap it and if you are serious about getting an entire set up look hard at the DMT8C or Atoma.
Wet/Dry sand paper (around 400 grit) and a flat surface (many use glass or tile) will get you going,
but the $40 to $50 dollars is well worth it if you plan on doing even moderate amounts of honing. It is just Whisker Whacking
Relax and Enjoy!

Thanks, pfries and mainaman.
I'm already on my journey. I started with a Naniwa 12k ss. I'm going to stay with the 3/8 k choice. And get a "dirty" bevel setter. Use my Nagura slurry ho where appropriate. I only have a handful of razors and I seem to have a handle on their growth...
