    Default difference between hones

will some razors do better off of a Norton 4/8 K stone than a 3/8 nanawa SS. I have 1K 3/8K 12K nan. SS and also have a 4/8 K Norton. I also have a small collection of barbers hones (swatty, john preamble and reliance. the reliance is a 2 sided stone. ) I'm still having some trouble with one razor. it gets sharp but not quite enough. I've been following lynns video on the u tube. I've used the paste and stropped well.

Might help to tell what razor it is and what you have been trying. Is it the same all the way up and down the edge on both side etc.

Not sure you are going to see difference. 4/8k Nortotn is used very widely as standard hone in progressions, and AFAIK there are no complaints with consistency.
I know some have more then one progression, but for me my set takes on anything I throw at it with no issues.

I don't know about any differences withe the hones and razors but your problem sounds to me more about the bevel. No real way of knowing without more info but i would go back to setting the bevel and making sure it is up to snuff before going up in grit.

Sounds like the bevel is not set 100%,
it make take some gymnastics to get it there.
    Give a bit more description,
Is the entire edge less than perfect?
Or is it spotty for lack of a better term (sharp some places but not everywhere)?
Which tests are you using to verify the bevel is set?

Going up the ladder prior to the blade being ready is an exercise in futility (ask me how I know...)
Let us know and we will see if we can get you straightened out.

It was the world master. looks like I jumped the gun with this one. I re-honed it this morning. used the paste and stropped with cloth and leather (many strokes) then used it. this time it performed well. I paid very close attention to angle of blade. all in all I may be trying to go at this to fast. my wife tells me that I've got all the patience I was born with because I've never used any again thanks

Have you read "Hitting the stone wall and climbing over" by gssixguns?
Great read that addresses some of what you are talking about.
I still have blades I need to walk away from, sometimes just for an hour or two sometimes for days.

Here is a link if you are interested
