Thread: Norton 4/8k .... Now what?

First and Foremost, I went with the Norton 4/8 as when I was a meat cutter I used and still use the Norton Tri-Stone Oil Stones to sharpen my knives so I felt confident about the quality of their products.
After getting consecutively good shaves I went with the Naniwa 12k instead of pursuing a natural hone. My reasoning was 'Consistency' which is something that a natural stone may not provide. By that I mean that one from the same mine only taken out a few inches away may not hone the same as it's neighbor!!!
I don't have the money to try to chase down a natural that will 'Work for Me'! I have a friend who has spent probably thousands buying and selling before finding the ones that work for 'Him'! But there again, he is one fussy SOB!
Personally for the money, I think that the Naniwa 12k provides the most bang for the buck!!Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

Just wanted to say thanks again.... the advice here is ALWAYS super helpful. I didn't get the 12k, and for now I think I'll stick with just the norton. By messing with angles and pressure etc, I've been getting ridiculous (good) edges:
I've never had any experience sharpening blades and I assume that may have helped my learning curve (no bad habits to relearn). I feel like after month of honing assorted blades from eBay I've now got blisters on my fingers from honing and blades that make the hairs explode and fall off from fear.
This is an awesome hobbyLast edited by ecormier; 12-27-2013 at 02:59 AM.
