Gentlemen, you probably did not notice what kind of chromium oxide Lynn Abrams is using.
It is the extraordinary Mastro Livi chromium oxide stick. To me it is the very best of the very best, capable of giving a super smooth edge to any razor. You probably did not notice Lynn Abrams is also using Mastro Livi loom strop, another extraordinary tool that, combined with Mastro's chromium oxide stick works wonders. To me, this combination is the very best I have ever used in my life.
And, last but not the least, Lynn Abrams is also using his renowned talent, skill and experience. I guess this is what really makes a difference! The RazorGuy - StraightRazorChannel on Youtube and Google+

Most of the time I can get a comfortable shave from the 8k. I eventually upgraded to the Naniwa 12k and my edges improved even more. There are a lot of options out there, you will have to find what you like the feel of. There are the synthetic hones which will provide a great edge and so will naturals. Some guys swear by synthetic stones and others will have a heart attack if you use anything but natural stones. It is all a matter of preference and I'm not saying I like one more than the other… I don't want to start a synthetic vs. natural war..
I started on the 4/8k then moved to a synthetic 12k and am getting good results. My honing is not up to par with the professionals though. I've still got a long way to go. In the hands of a professional, synthetic and natural stones can both yield a fantastic edge.
I chose the route I did because it seemed like the best value for the money and seemed like a good choice to continue learning on.Last edited by MuskieMan33; 12-10-2013 at 05:02 PM.

No intention to start a war as well, but I can tell some steels seem to like a synthetic hone better while others like a natural better.
I guess any razor and any steel have their own personality and, in my opinion, they react differently according to hone types.
Pastes seem to give an equal result no matter the steel or razor. Just my experience, of course. The RazorGuy - StraightRazorChannel on Youtube and Google+
