Default Are There Any Mentors Close To Me?

Hello everyone, I am looking to getting mentor help for learning how to hone. I would like to be able to find someone close to me to possibly meet and teach me how to properly hone my razors. Also if someone could tell me a good site to go to to buy hones......

    First things First!!

How long have you been using a Straight Razor??? How’s it going making Lather?? How is your stropping???

In my opinion these must be mastered or at least semi mastered before even considering learning to hone!

If you have mastered the ‘basics’ let us know!! Then you can receive some counsel to help guide you!

I don't want to seem to try to keep you from learning how to hone, it's just that the basics are soooooooo Important before advancing!

I have been straight shaving about a month now, my lathering is going great actually, at first I was having problems but I've gotten better, my stropping is going pretty good I think, I am being slow to make sure I don't mess up. . I also used to hone knives as well because I used to be a chef. Lol

I was a meat cutter for several years and I will tell you straight out that the difference between 'sharpening a knife' and 'honing' a razor as as different as black and white!!

    IT'S A WHOLE DIFFERENT WORLD!!!

Please take your time, go slow! Every Thing about this 'Art' involves Patience!!!

Honing can wait! Get the 'Basics' Down Pat!!! Just ask pinklather/a Mentor/why he chose that 'handle'!!!!!

Cuda is right and finding a mentor is your best bet. I walked into a woodworking store and picked up my Norton 4/8 at a fair price. You may have a chance to try a few things before you buy if the mentor has other rocks to play with :<0)
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Thanks to both of you, I used to work as a meat cutter at a store chain called Kroger, The most "fun" things to do was cleaning the meat saw and bone saw, and breaking down the seafood department. Frigging shrimp tails will stab you any chance they get! I thought it would be pretty different but not that different. Lol and as to pinklather..that sounds scary. Lol
