Default So I've got these stones...

Do I have the bases covered for setting a bevel to final touch up with the tools I have currently at my disposal? I have:
Naniwa SS 400 grit (for rough work)
    DMT 8C and a DMT8E (for lapping)
    Naniwa SS in 1000, 5000, 8000, 12000
    Shapton Glass 16000
    SRD English Briddle Strop

Any holes in my "system"? Advise?

    Thanks for looking!

Holes? Your kidding right. Just the Naniwas will serve you. One day I'd like to try the Shapton 16k but I figure my stropping on linen or pasted linen then leather covers the final finish after coming off the Naniwa 12k.

Good luck you've got the stones, lol.

Well the naniwa 400 and the shapton 16000 might be a bit redundant or unnecessary.

Thanks for the input. I figure with the right tools and enough time, I can learn to do my part. Sharpened a lot of knives, but new to razors...apples and oranges...the 400 I can always use for knives. Should the Shapton prove unnecessary, it may eventually wind up in the classies.

I believe that both the naniwa 12k and the shapton 16k are the same. I do believe there is a 32k that might make a difference.

    Welcome to SRP :<0)

I wouldn't say unnecessary but it may be awhile before you feel the difference if you are new to all of this. I spent my first year with a 1k 4/8k set up and learned to get great shaves off those before moving up to a 12k. You have more than enough to do what you need to do. If you want to get fanatical about it you could get pastes and nano cloth with diamond spray.

Learning the 1k will make or break you.

Based on what I know of sharpening, you are 100% correct. One good stroke at 1000 is worth 10000 good strokes at 10000. All the work happens at setting the bevel. The rest is simply refinement (and not ruining my bevel ).

Just starting out with straights. Knife guy for a while, pretty good with sharpening those, but I realize this is a whole new ballgame. With sharpening, I'll take every advantage I can get. Don't smoke, don't drink (anymore ), too old and slow to chase girls, might as well have a good set of sharpening tools...

Been shaving with a nice Feather DX to acquaint myself with bare blade shaving, it's time to take the SR plunge. Got a couple of nice razors on the way as well (stoopid slow holiday mail...).
