Ohzuku suita?
Hi there!
I've got a few Ohzuku's and after some use there are more and more white-ish specs, especially on one of them,
after looking more closely I suspect now it could be a suita, could I be right?
Thank you!

The kanji lettering on the stone is 大突 that is Ozuku
But as for "whitish specs" or small holes I think it is not a discriminating marks for Suita type.
I have seen a lot of Tomae Awasedo with such a specs and holes.Last edited by Nikolay; 01-09-2014 at 12:19 PM.

Thanked: 177I would look at it with a loupe as they could be holes with swarf in them, or minerals splashed in the stone. Bottom line is how does it produce? Everything else including stamps is irrelevant.

Thanked: 177Its possible the holes are full of grit like maybe a nagura or tomo. Ive heard that some recommend not using nagura or tomos on suita for this reason. If it were mine, I would lap it down a bit and take another look. Steel fillings (swarf) can look like mica.

The abrasive grains of stone are crushing into finest dust during sharpening and this dust is filling all that small holes.
It's normal.
You can get rid of that dust with ultrasonic cleaner. But usually you don't need to.

Thanked: 2591A very telling sign of suita is their layered structure, just look at the side , if you can show us pics it will be easier to tell. Some hard stones can have small holes like that but they are not su. I have an Ozuko like that, it is very hard and very very fine finisher.
Another feature to consider is the color of the stone. From the pics your stone looks green with rusty spots, suitas are not green. Typical suita colors are yellow, orange, white and mixtures of those. Finally I can see clouds in the features of your stone, suitas do not have that feature.Last edited by mainaman; 01-09-2014 at 01:20 PM.

It seems to me that such a stones with such coloration and such "suji" ( 筋 ) are rather so called "deep stratum", than suita.
BTW here it is the example of ordinary Oohira Tomae with small holes AKA "su" ( 巣 ): Oohira Tomae
And here it is some examples of Ozuku Suita stones:
