I ended up getting a taidea 3/8. They were on sale for $30. I couldn't say no. They appear to work just fine - I get a perfectly functional edge off them and am still totally a novice.
They are somewhat soft and need to be relapped quite a bit. But, I'm just doing my own razors and actually kind of like the lapping process; it's a strangely zen sort of thing. So they seem to work for me. I don't find myself regretting the choice. I can understand how a pro would find then annoying. If I was doing ten or twenty razors a day the need to constantly relap would be insufferable.
