    Default Naniwa superstones thickness

    Hello guys,

I have seen on this site that naniwa super stones come in two thicknesses, 1mm and 2mm. So I would like to ask you, do super stones wear fast? If I get the 1mm one will it need to be replaced soon?

    Thank you!

The average guy is not likely to wear out the 1cm stone unless he hones a ton of razors that need bevel setting and even in that case, probably only the 1K. Still, I prefer the 2cm stone without the base. The last time I suggested that I was yelled at. I think they thought I was talking about holding the stone in hand. No, I simply prefer to buy one Steel-Ex type holder rather than a holder for every stone. Of course, some like the convenience of just grabbing the hone with base assembly and are not bothered by the extra bulk. It's purely a personal preference thing.

    I don't know much but from what i unnerstand about metrically-oriented metrications: 1cm is 10mm and that's like 10x 1mm.

And 10mm is about 3/8 or .375 inches, which doesn't seem nearly so thin.

__so i went for a looksee__

Text from the joint: Naniwa 'Superstone' waterstones are available in a wide variety of grit sizes and in selected grits, two different thicknesses, 10mm and 20mm and both thicknesses come mounted on a plastic base. The thinner stones have a lower initial price. The thicker stones cost more initially, but are more economical over time.

10mm is what also could be considered 1cm. and that...oh wait we already did that.

"more economical over time" eh? could be. How long?

I have both the 10mm and 20mm stones. You shouldn't wear either out although i do prefer to hone on the 20mm stones.

If you have access to the 20mm stones i would get them over the 10mm for sure.

So much mocking for one moment of weakness?

I will probably go for the 20mm one, it is double the size and the price difference is not that big.

The 2cm stones without the plastic stand are the way to go. You can hone on both sides between lappings, and also use the narrow sides for dealing with smiling blades that don't work well on wide hones.

The higher the grit size the slower the wear
