Changing Stones
Like most people starting out I purchased the Norton 4/8k and began learning my way around honing. There isn't anything wrong with this stone and once you get it down it delivers a pretty good edge. I decided it was time to try something different. So, I purchased a "Llyn Melynllyn" Welsh Sharpening Hone from aj_1001 on Ebay. Like all Ebay purchases, I checked out his Feedback page and found zero problem and great reviews of this stone. I'm not going to debate the grit of this stone, just relay the results to you. Using my daily shaver, with a semi-dull edge, I found the Purple Welsh Stone produced much better results than the Norton 4/8k and with less effort. This stone cuts considerably fast and leaves a great edge for your finishing stone. During the HHT the Welsh stone produced a more responsive edge and grabbed hairs much easier than the Norton. I would recommend this stone to all looking to venture out and buy a new hone.

I got a set of those stones from aj a while back and have been quite pleased with them I was looking to get a Escher/Thuringian but once I got these stones my search was over unless the price on the Escher/Thurinian come way down. With anything some like them and some don't but I know how I like the edge on my Razors and these stones work just fine for ME.

Thanked: 4827I recently had the chance to try one in Edmonton. It is a very nice hone, so I ordered one too, and now I'm waiting on the mail.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!
