I have a lot of gear that I bought when I was a general contractor that has paid for itself a long time ago. I also have a brother that has a ton of tools and a friend that is a millwright so I get by a little easier than if I started rock hounding with nothing. I do have a lot of fun.

Recently got this piece here from dennisthebarber. It's a piece of rock from his home state of Kentucky. Very hard, it doesn't slurry but it does produce a very nice edge. I was sent this piece and a darker. More testing will tell but currently I'm liking the darker slightly more. They're an immense amount of work to get turned into a hone so I am rather fortunate to have gotten these as I don't see him doing any more. I'm still in testing phases and getting it dialed in but so far, so good.
Glad ya like em, ill probably make more but will be quite limited as I get burned out LOL. The dark one was the first hone I ever made and it gives a great edge. The other I haven't played with too much but gives a good edge as well...I have like 2 or 3 of each made right now actually.

Is the black one the first? I had them confused. It is pretty sweet. The lighter isn't far behind. I need to dial in my testing.

I still think its cool how the slurry on the black one looks like a reddish chocolate. I need to try the other out using a slurry stone from the black slate...curious how it'd perform.

I'm a little envious of you; I am on the high ground in my part of Florida (28 ft above sea level). The soil is basically sand and the only rocks are pea gravel at the home centers.

That's because yer sitting on Limestone and you got the Chattahoochee they import in from up north. You need to make some field trips up north.

I live in florida and I once found a nice chunk of quarts down by a lake. I have no idea where it came from nor do I know where it is anymore. There was obviously no other stones like it around. As to paraphrase Morgan Freeman, Its a rock that has no earthly business being there.
