Some quick picks of my latest find. I do hope I can get some more. It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

I've got some new slate to try out, but I haven't been in much of a hurry on lapping it. It sits beside my granite and SiC station and when I lap a knife sharpening stone I use up the left over SiC with the slate. I've almost got a big enough lapped patch to try.

Thanked: 4830So pared to other rocks. Most slate and shale is so soft, it laps quite fast. I have not got a vibrating lap for lapidary/ hone making, so it’s all by hand. As nice of hones that some of the volcanic rock has been, lapping is crazy.

Thanked: 4830I cut that piece off with a grinder. Smoothed it as best I could with the grinder and then lapped it. I’m at work until April 20th, once I get home I have a wet saw and will do some more cutting, and hopefully grab some more pieces on my way home.

So I guess it is best to move this here from the thread below.

I still have a ways to go but I got the rock flattened all but a couple of tiny spots. Here's what it looks like underneath nature's handiwork.
Darn pretty stone I think. Although it looks more green in person than it does in the photo.
It still have not been lapped or burnished but I ran a razor across the diamond plate on both sides and then worked it on this stone on one of the sides to have a comparison. In the current state it looks like a pretty good mid-range stone but once it is lapped and smoothed I'm hoping it will be good as a finisher.Last edited by PaulFLUS; 04-11-2021 at 07:07 PM.

Yes, that looks very very similar to this stone. I got it completely lapped and dressed it on wet/dry up to 1,000. I found it to be very much like an ark in character in terms of speed. It does however produce an edge that is very shiny. I'm just about to do a test shave from it now.
REPORTING BACK: so the test shave was quite interesting. It was dead keen and shaved quite well but leaned more toward the crisp side than smooth. I guess I would characterize it more like an ark edge than a coti edge But not exactly like either one. I'm going to play with it a little more on a razor I'm more in tune with. This was an imperial extra hollow ground but not one from my rotation. It is one that I was going to send to a member but decided it was not a good one for someone learning to hone. I'll give a more detailed report once I have tested it out more thoroughly, suffice it to say that it is a fine finisher though.Last edited by PaulFLUS; 04-11-2021 at 11:09 PM.

Most Nephrite Jade comes from Western Canada though it can be found in Wyoming. It's the state mineral.
