I finally got around to lapping the giant slab.
I don't know what it is but I know what it isn't and that's the bevel setter I was hoping for. I used the coarsest SIC I have and it has a pretty coarse surface. The stria it leaves looks like what a washita makes but after quite a period of making laps on that giant thing it will not create a drag on the TNT. I initially used a rather rough Thistle brand that I have lying around and thought that maybe the steel was just really hard so I switched over to an also rough Bengal and did the same with the same results. I also did some sets of the down and back half laps and was having lots of trouble geting it to leave even a slight burr. Maybe it's a mid range. Maybe it's a finisher or maybe it's a doorstop. I haven't figured that out yet. I'm not giving up yet but I was really hopeful that it would be a quick cutting bevel setter.
Still not certain but I really think it's old red sandsotne. Here's a close look.

Thanked: 4830If that’s sandstone it very even matrix. I haven’t found any sandstone with a nice even matrix. That would be a nice find even if it is just a hone shaped rock, because it would give me hope to keep looking.

Well I'm honestly not sure it's sandstone but I am pretty sure it's not limestone. Living in Florida you get pretty used to seeing limestone. The whole state sits on a bed of it and they quarry it here in this area. I used to go cliff diving in some of the abandoned pits near here. I know there are different kinds of limestone, and I haven't seen all of them but I would be really surprised if this was. Also I did the vinegar test (that's how we get it out of our pipes and off the shower floors and walls) and I got not even one little bible after at least 30 minutes.

It looks like sandstone to me. You can check for limestone with acid. Lots of aeolian sandstone is even grain like that, we have lots of it out here. My experience is that if they're fine enough to use, they're too slow to be practical.

Unlapped it seemed very coarse but not crumbly like the sandstone we have here. I was hopeful but maybe it's just a pretty rock.
