Naniwa 12k Does It All
I let a few of my straights get to the point where they were really pulling, tugging, and not shaving well so that they needed more than a touch-up. Then I pulled out the Naniwa 12k stone that I have always used as a finisher only. I did some circles with pressure, some Japanese type back and forth strokes with pressure, x strokes with pressure, then rinsed the stone, and finished the razors with 8 strokes of light pressure.
Well, the razors have the best shaving, smoothest, and most comfortable edges I have ever experienced. The shaves are the best ever. Does not matter what soap or cream I use. The razors were two Thiers Issards 6/8 and 7/8, a 7/8 Sheafworks near wedge, and a 7/8 Hart square point.
There was no need to resort to the Norton 4/8k.
Just wondering if anyone else has tried this?

Yep. A common refreshing method.
My Nani 12K is a good friend of mine. Also, gssixgun (a notable honemeister, bladesmith, etc) recommended that the versatility of the stone could be expanded with the use of a Nagura slurry stone when a slight bit of cutting power is needed. Also, on my other stones, when more cutting power(in the form of the slurry) is needed.

If razor cut, but not very well , in my opinion is enough naniwa 12000 (with the right number of passes is equivalent to a Naniwa 8000)
When i finished use naniwa 5k ,razor are pulling..after the 12k razors cut very well and comfortable."Consider well the seed that gave your birth: you were not made to lives as brutes, but to following virtue and knoweledge"

I've never used a synthetic finsher, unless shaving off a King 6K counts, but on my naturals any sort of damage inflicted by general day to day shaving can be rectified by substituting a lower grit for a little patience and pressure.
I left the room for a moment a few nights ago and returned to find my friend cutting open a packet of green tea with a razor I'd just finshed honing. I worked up a slurry on my Chinese natural and after 20-30 mins of playing around it was back in action, it would have taken longer to soak my King 1K than it did to rectify the edge on a notoriously slow stone.

If you tell me that the shaves are great - then they are great! Congrats!
It reminds me of a time when I let a blade get "stale" and then out of pure laziness used the finisher that was in my den... because it was there.
I thought the thing was shaving like nothing else! But it dulled quick, so I finally stepped back a few levels and WOW lol!! I didn't know smooth !!
Finishing a dulling blade is good times though!!David

Thanked: 3795I agree that there was no need "to resort to the Norton 4/8k," but I suspect that there was no need to resort to anything other than 8 strokes with NO pressure on the Naniwa 12k. Unless you have evidence of damage to the edge, the first attempt at restoring the edge should be a minimal touch up. Oftentimes that is actually all that is needed.

When I touch up, I have never had to drop below the finisher that I used to bring it to shave ready in the first place. I have never used a Naniwa 12k (will get one soon), but my Shapton 16, Zulu (borrowed), Welsh Slate, Coticule never needed more than 10 strokes to put the edge back on the line. Little, to no pressure used.
