Twilight hone

IT SPARKLES!!! Sorry, err... my wife made me watch those movies... Anyway, I came across this stone, and after lapping it I found to my surprise that it was very sparkly. I have heard talk of hones that sparkle, but these suggestions go anywhere from bbw to slate, so I'm taking those with a grain of salt. I mention bbw particularly because this stone gives a purplish slurry. The stone is about as far from looking purple as can be, either wet or dry. Here's the best photos I could manage right now without setting up the light box:




As you can see from the second pic, my bbw shows that there is pretty much no purple in the stone. It doesn't smell like anything but an old rock kept in a wood box for a long time. Also, it "feels" about a smooth as my PHIG, but then again that's a very iffy test at best, IMO. As to scratch patterns, I plan on attacking it with a junked razor tomorrow evening to see what happens. If I get seemingly good results I will proceed to a shave test with a better condition razor. Any suggestions as to what this thing might be would be wonderfully appreciated!

BBWs can be more blueish and this one seems to be in the colour range. Some of mine are pretty smooth to the touch as well. It should have some kind of (3d) pattern characteristic for BBWs.

I think I know where the side picture request is going: there are no distinct striations in to be seen in the hone. It is for the most part uniform, maybe a very little bit of layer, but not enough to really tell through the lapping marks (it was gummed up from living in a box for most it's hone-life).

I took a blade that had devil's spit on the edge to this stone with slurry, then without, and was able to get an edge that would pop hairs off on my arms. I would guess the sharpness was similar to coming off a chosera 1k with slurry. The scratch patterns were visible, but I will have to take a razor through a full progression to really get an idea of what it is doing.

Sure looks like a coticule to me, especially with the white layer on the bottom side. My BBW gives a purple slurry.

I think you looked at the wrong stone, I meant for that coti to show that the stone in question ( underneath the tiny little coti) has no purple in it. I am just absolutely drawing a blank on what this thing is. I think I'll go start soaking some stones so I can run a razor through the progressions and try finishing on this thing.

OK, that makes sense. Look in the "special stone only for good razors" thread, especially at the second page of posts. There, Oldengaerde posted a video of the stone sparkling. If you've got the same thing, sounds like you're a very very lucky man!

According to that thread, this special stone gives off a slurry with a "metallic blue sheen" and usually has some text on the edge.

Thanks a lot! I had seen that thread start up a little while back, but for whatever reason didn't check it out. The video is exactly what my stone looks like when I say it sparkles. I think I found what I was looking for in Oldengaerde's post (#23) where they mention Fox hones, which took me to http://straightrazorpalace.com/hones...your-pick.html . If you look at the 4th and 5th pictures you see a hone that looks strikingly similar to mine, but that one looks pretty purple compared to mine. I will do a little more link searching.

Even though it doesn't have the wood looking pattern? It's seriously grey with a very slight hint of purple/red in good light. Are there BBW's that are over and inch thick?
