Hone ID/ Mystery Hone?
Here is a hone I purchased and was wondering if anyone could ID it. One side is rough and seems unfinished while the other has been lapped. The slurry is strange in that on the stone it appears grey/whitish, but off the stone more a blackish color? Here are some pics...

On the first look it looks like a kind of Schist, hard to tell though what it is....
I would recomment 2-4 additionals shots on daylight with slurry pictures and details of both sides....
Any sawmarks visible ? Hard stone or soft stone ? Easy to lap ?███▓▒░░.RAZORLOVESTONES.░░▒▓███

I have nothing to add other than that's a good looking stone!!
What does it do to your blade? Any ideas as to where in the progression it belongs? Is it hard?? What you use to make the slurry?David

Pic one and two are slurry shots. Pic three is the unfinished back and four is the lapped side. It was decently quick to lap compared to a c12k. It came with a slurry stone of the same kind of stone. There are are saw marks on the edges. The feedback seems pretty minimal but the edge it leaves seems pretty great. First hht-5 ever for me I'm excited for the shave test. Thanks for the help guys I'll try for more pics tomorrow
Razor rich, but money poor. I should have diversified into Eschers!

I honestly don't know but secretly, I am hoping its a German frankenstone! I have heard many good things sbout them a while back when they were the flavor of the day... It was the first thing I thought of when I saw it.
Again... I really don't know. But who cares if you are getting those kind of results!! Congrats!!David

Easy one,,,,,,,
what you have is a Gecko C12K, more commonly known as a Gecko PHIG. The stone gets it's name for the ability to change the color of it's slurry. It's mined high up in the K2 Mountains, also called the Savage Mountain, on the border of Pakistan & China. A very slow cutter, but with practice, will produce a wonderful edge.

Who and/or where did you purchase this stone from and how was it described?
What's with the address on the envelop?
Btw to me it just looks like slate/schist.

I purchased the hone from the Bay. It was advertised as "vintage razor hone natural stone & rubber Thuringian Escher type sharpener". It for sure sparkles like schist. It was shipped from Indian Orchard, MA.
"Here is a nice old razor hone that just came out of an old tool chest. There was no box with it but the 2 pieces were together. Looks like a natural stone with rough face on one side and the rest rest dressed. The big piece measures 4 1/2" x 2" x 1/2" and the rubber is 1" x2" x 1/2"-3/8". Could be an Escher stone. I show the picture of the slurry. Stone is flat but has some light gouges or scratches as shown that should clean up with little effort. A nice old razor hone or use for any cutting edges."

It for sure is not a Phig like Woodcraft sells. I have a Phig and this is a lot different.
