About 28 years ago I bought a Black Arkansas hone that had some translucence in white in it. I was sharpening Japanese chisels and a plane blade. I remember it had zero feedback before I knew what feedback was.

Like this one? Those are not scratches on the upper edges, they are white/translucent veins and white marbling on the corner.

This is a very hard, nice finisher, it is a 4X2.5 stoneā€¦ but still works well for razors not so much for large knives.

Similar, with the white marbling, a beautiful stone really, but like they say HARD.

I love my translucent Arkansas to bits and go to it after the coticle - it does take a lot of strokes compared to some other finishing stones but it does give a beautiful edge. I don't mind doing lots of strokes on it but some people feel there are other stones that give a comparable finish and require less labour - perhaps something to be considered.
