Is this a Hindostan hone? ID help please.
Its a big piece of rock, 22cm X 4cm X 4cm and it took awhile to lap (As with most vintage hones it was a bit rough and covered in oil)
What kinda grit ratings do they run at, I know it can vary with all naturals and only honing will give the best indication to me, but a ball park estimate would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Thanked: 4249The sides layering, color, hardness, slurry color, sure sign you got a Hindostan. As far as grit rating the range on these can vary a lot, heard of some being in the 4k range, but most are finisher 8k+.

Does anyone know how these hones got their name?
Phonetically it is/resembles a word that describes the northern part of India or India in general (in the relevant dialect).Piyush

Thanks - I'm well aware of it. However I was not in the mood nor had the amount of time it would take to sift through all the hits.
It was a simple question and I have received a simple response via PM. Perhaps this wasn't the best place to post the question.
In any event, I got the answer I was looking for and I appreciate the follow up.Piyush
