Could you take a picture of the grind marks on the faso. I recently picked up a thuringian and a guy I know who knows more about thuris than me said that the grind marks looked like those of a faso hone. So I would love to compare them.

Unfortunately, there are a few opportunistic sellers trying for a large price with them. I guess they snag someone new once in a while, which is a shame.

I have tried a couple, and they have a glint evident to the naked eye from the quartz and if used to finish a razor, they leave an undesirable edge like a cheap random natural slate that can be found in antique stores over here.

As a prelude to a slurried escher, they may be OK, but many stones are better unless someone is dedicated to an all slate progression.

Thanks for the picture of the LG thuri. I had a Y/G and had read several posts that said that light blue is finer, but most old barber manuals suggest the Y/G are the stones to have. Very nice even stone, low risk, but too much money these days!! Many others do the same thing, though not with as little variation as the l/G y/g thuris and eschers I've used.

I absolutely love my 1.75" x 8.25" Y/G Escher (yes, labelled) - I lucked out and got mine for under $50. Very very nice keen and comfortable edges.

I also must say that people say all the time that any Thuri can give as good an edge as an Escher - and while this is true, it is not every Thuri that can do so. I have gotten a few unlabeled Thuris that don't get anywhere near as comfortable of an edge, and although they are cut the same size as the Eschers and appear identical visually to the naked eye, they are visibly coarser under magnification. The edges aren't nearly as comfortable either. So I would guess pretty much every Escher is probably going to give edges that are "there" every time, while you may have to purchase several unlabeled Thuris to get a good one.

They are like a point and shoot camera. They do what they say they'll do and the user doesn't have to be that great at using them (and every one is the same). I would've loved one at $50 or $100, but I had to pay a lot more. A friend found a green unlabeled thuri 5x2.5 inches and full thickness that bettered my labeled y/g escher for sharpness and he paid the princely sum of $6 for it.

I'd say something about luck, but when you don't go to yard sales (I don't), you can't complain much about not finding things at yard sales.

Mhh...thats really wondering me...the thuris i got till now and i talk about 20-40 Stones were all that good that i could shave well from each individual...

Yes there are kind of variances and i agree that the Eschers and Bouts are kind of overperforming or very good, but several other were also playing in this league...

Oh I can certainly shave from them still but they aren't as comfortable as the Escher for sure. Still nothing to really complain about, but I can certainly tell the difference. (Then again I have very easily irritated/sensitive skin in the main area that I tell the difference - neck area).

The little 1" x 4" or whatever it was that I got from you Sebastian is also a little coarser than the CWH and the Escher. This is visible even with a 20x loupe.

Yes, I did say that... =) I would venture to guess that they are a lot more prevalent in Germany.
