Thanked: 1587And you can magnify what Gugi said by an order of magnitude or two for Japanese natural stones. Not only are there many many types from many many regions with many many strata from many many mines operating during many many eras, information on them is very hard to get.

Thanked: 2On a related note, what's your thought on zulu grey and black Arkansas stones? I hear the Arkansas is traditional but unforgiving. Some life using the water soluble Smith's honing oil on the zulus. I'm assuming the same would work in a black Arkansas.

Thanked: 24I don't have either one of them, I know I want a set of arkensas stones somewhere in the future, don't know yet if I want the translucent but I do want the surgical black, they should be nice finishing hones. the Zulu grey was found and produced by someone here on this forum and I hear good thing about them.
but if you're looking for something more of a buget stone you could try the Welsh Slate stones sold by AJ on ebay, I do have these stones and I like them a lot
