They aren't I hate to say. An Escher Company labeled 2x6" Thuringian hone went for $1,280 a few days ago. Japanese Naturals don't seem quite as pricy as labeled Thuringians, but barber-hone (140x75mm or so) JNats can easily bring several hundred or more for really decent ones.
That Escher is I hope, a trendy anomaly, but historically good fine-grit whetstones are tools of journeyman craftsmen and command the price of a fine tool used to make a living. Stone fine enough and of good enough quality to hone razors has always been of a low percentage of natural whetstones produced and are the most expensive.

Ahh, interesting.
I wonder if there is a black market for hones. I know. Probably should be awake longer than I am before I pos to avoid saying random things. Just imagine the conversation, though.
