    Default Straight Razor Hone????

Just saw this..Kind of strange that it is being auctioned as a...
Very Unusual Vintage Combination Wilderness Straight Razor Hone Stone & Lather Cup.

    Lather cup?
    Razor hone?
I think it is actually a calligraphy stone/pigment stone.

Yes, it's an inkstone. There are a lot of inkstones that are mistakenly named hones or sharpening stones. This one looks a bit odd.

Yeah, what Vasilis said, it is a Japanese inkstone (Suzuri)and you take a stick of ceramic like ink and some water, rub the stick on the stone and the water captures the particles to make ink. It was used by calligraphers and other artists, probably still is by purists. I have one and have made ink with it. More cost effective to buy ready made ink. I flipped it and tried it as a hone and it wasn't suited to that purpose.

Its for grinding inksticks for ink used in brush calligraphy.

Still a cool idea. You may not be able to get blood from a turnip, but ink from a stone is cool!

Just got an email back from the vendor thanking me for the info. He re-listed it in the correct category of ink stones and upped the opening bid to 59.95! A far cry from an opening of 12 bucks. Maybe I should ask for a commission for setting him straight.
