Good ideas all around. Hirlau, I did that test with the penny and it was solid. I will soak it in some light oil for a bit and try it out on a few knives I have around the house. This area where I picked this stone up is a rural farming area and quite probably this stone resided in some farmers workshop. Thanks to all.
