Thanked: 18new dmt,new hone and new to me hones
Got my new DMT 325 and naniwa 12k from SRD. also snagged a 3 line swaty and c12k from eBay. Lapped them tonight. Thankfully they were all relatively flat and the pencil grid method seemed to work. I know I have some nice finishers now. it will be awhile before I need to use them now, as I have about ten shave ready razors! The time will come where the blades need some touchups. In the meantime I have two practice blades to learn on. My learning progress is a direct results of this forum and the people on it. Thank you all !

Good luck Nodak! Prepare to enter the wonderful/infuriating world that is honing. I can say its very similar to golf now that I think about it, but there is no such thing as a handicap hone. What are you using as practice razors? I guess I'm bad... as soon as new hone is in you better believe metal is hitting it whether it needs it or not. Gssixgun has a video up for doing a one stone hone on the C12k even if you're feeling adventurous on your practice blades; though he begins with a 1k to set the bevel. Have loads of fun and keep us updated on your progress.

Thanked: 18Thanks ! My two practice blades are some cheap gold dollars. Gssixgun did four of my blades and Lynn did one. So I do have some benchmarks. Truly I am trying to learn the right way and I know by the time I NEED my razors honed I will be more than capable of doing it myself. I know I have learned a lot already. I know I have a long way to go yet. I'm looking forward to it!

A lil FYI with the Gold Dollars. They can have geometry problems and grind issues quite often. One of the most common issues seems to be needing to grind down the shoulder in order to hone the heel properly. It's an easy fix but confusing as a beginner. There are plenty of threads to help with those issues though.

My DMT 325 very rarey touches a razor but I found it a good help in setting the bevel on Gold Dollars.

Congratulations! You're going to have some fun. I touched up one that was pulling and it gave an amazing shave.
