Unknown stone advice.
Hi,
I have been given this stone by my grandfather and neither he or I have any idea what the stone is? can anybody shed any light on the stone, I have tried to upload some pictures, however if they are not any good then I will put up some more later. Would it be possible to find out what grit it is? and if so how?
many thanks.

Welcome to SRP. If you post dimensions that might help members ID the stone. Many times the quarries made typical sizes, IOW, all the same.
When it is dry is it one color, or does it have any inclusions ?Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 458Can you wash it off so that we can see the surface of the stone. You've got half of the battle covered - we like to see the stone with slurry and the stone with no slurry.
With a heavy slurry that stays black like that, it looks like a slate of some type.

Hi, JimmyHAD
The stone dimentions are as followes:
47mm wide, 20mm deep, 174mm long.
The stone is all one color when dry/wet
When you say inclusions do you mean marks / lines/ colors? then the answer would be no inclusions .
Thanks.

Well if there are no marks, lines, other colors, I.E. inclusions, that is a good thing. I don't know these slates that are common to the UK. My first impression was a Thuringan but it is quite possible that it is a slate. Nice size stone whatever it is. Some of the more knowledgeable members will no doubt be along and maybe nail it down. If you hone razors, whatever it is, that will let you know if it is a finisher or what.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

My vote on a Thuringian also without HQ Pics...daylight pics would be well appreciated thought its not easy to guess the right colour here...could be black, green or darkblue....
Any visible sawmarks?███▓▒░░.RAZORLOVESTONES.░░▒▓███

Thanked: 202Due to colour of the slurry I would not go for Thuri. Instead I would say it is slate. Unless the stone was shortened I am not able to say more.
