Thanked: 2Is it an escher?
I picked up this stone awhile back and haven't figured out what it is. It looks like an Escher or thuringian from the pictures I've seen on here. It slurries easily and finishes very nice. It does have faint saw marks on both ends. It measures 1 1/8" wide by 6" long by 9/16 thick. What do you guys think?

I'm certainly by no means versed in stones, but it does look similar to my yellow streaked Escher, specifically your pic #3.
I know the surface on this one, and the dark black/grey one I have, feel like glass, very, very smooth.
Just posting this as an FYI - other's with more expertise can make offer some possible answers:

I can definitely say ....... maybe, maybe not ....... hard to tell from photos. It is like when I brought a Hamilton wristwatch to a repairman years ago. I asked him if it was a 'good watch.' He asked me if it kept good time. He said 'if it keeps good time it is a good watch.' So if it finishes razors well, it is a good stone.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Jimmy's got it right...as usual. Impossible to tell what kind of stone it is from pictures. Dimensions also may give you a clue but that is not definitive either. The only way I know how to tell for sure is to hold it my hands, and compare it to a labeled Escher, and to how a razor 'feels' on the stone.
Good luck though!

Worst case scenario it was right twice a day

Thanked: 2It definitely finishes nice. I think it will become my go to finisher as it puts a nicer finish on than my coticule. It would be nice to know for sure if my $4 antique store find is an Escher. I know it will be impossible to say for sure but would any different pics help?

Thanked: 3795It might be a Thuringian, though I have my doubts from the photos, but without a label it ain't an Escher.

A label would help, lacking that you can't be sure.

To show the true color of the stone take some good shots in the natural sunlight, dry showing the top from an angle with the side showing too. Then the shots with it wet with and without slurry. Even then it won't be possible to say for sure. Eschers many times had saw marks that help to ID them. Sometimes guys lap the sides too though.

I like to add 15x3cm is a size thuringians were cut in. Better pics would help.
