    Default Help with ID please.

    Hey all,

looking for some help on identifying this hone, was given to me today.

    Slightly red -brown colour.

looks like its on the larger end of the grit size scale but not entirely sure.

Has the letters and numbers: 37C320.NB down one side.

    thanks heaps.

There is a link here that has a similar number on one of the hones... So it may be safe to assume it's a Norton

That's a Norton crystolone slip stone for sharpening the inside of V shaped wood chisels.
    It's "fine" grit - maybe 6k.

Not meant for razors. If you know a wood carver, they would probably take it off your hands. They have HAD as well. I've got 3 of those all ready, so I don't need a fourth. Or do I????

I have a stone like this that gesswe then this rest is not readable. I guessing the stone is made a little bit soft so someone can easy remove stone to get the stone useable.

    @ suile
Yours would be a gesswein stone. If it is really soft then it is probably a jewelry polisher.

Would it be possible to lap it to use on razors? I'm not much of a woodworker or is the material just not appropriate for razors?

Sorry you should test the grit am not concerned that it is a fine one as chriswilson writes...

My guess would be that the numbers 320 are a gritsize...i can be wrong...

    I wouldn't put a razor on it.
That flat area is for your hand to hold the stone with, not to hone. The flat area is also usually coarse compared to the fine bottom of the "V".
