Default DMT 325 aka The Wonder Tool.

Last year, I walked into Woodcraft to buy the one and only hone I would ever need for the rest of my shaving life; the Norton 4/8.(I was very wrong in this assumption!!!) I was about to spend 80 bucks on a basically a rock and this seemed so crazy to me. I knew, I would need a way to lap my new uber-stone and began looking around at my options. There were lapping plates in excess of two hundred dollars, a DMT for fifty, a piece of granite for sandpaper, and the twenty five dollar Norton lapping stone. These prices seemed insane so I went with the cheapest option; the Norton. The Norton lapper was a decent stone, but eventually I upgraded to a DMT 325.

IT WAS WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!!! This plate can do so freaking much you would not believe! It is an excellent lapping stone that never needs to be flattened unlike the Norton. If you plan on doing restoration razors get a DMT and skip the Norton. Besides lapping duties this stone will; re-contour heels, flatten out protruding shoulders, take out chips, breadknife in a breeze, and restart that long gone bevel your breadknifing destroyed. It is just so very versatile and useful I cannot praise it enough. If you are new to honing and need a lapping means buy this stone. Save yourself the mistake I made. The only real gripe I have about my DMT is that it will rust somewhat easily if not dried after use. I found that out after lapping a stone and being so excited I forgot to go back for the DMT. That problem is easily fixed by making sure to dry it after every use.

Razor rich, but money poor. I should have diversified into Eschers!

I have been looking at them but the only one I can find down here is 5 by 2 inch, is that the one you have?

    Buy DMT Dia-Sharp, 8" x 3" Bench Stone, Coarse at Woodcraft.com

Here is the DMT I have and would highly suggest.
Have you tried amazon? here is that link as well and I know the do ship internationally, but I dont know if it would be cost prohibitive.

You can also go to the parent company and buy from them: Diamond Dia-Flat Lapping Plate | DMTĀ® - Diamond Machining Technology

If you are looking to spend a bit more up front (as the OP stated) then I would recommend the Dia Flat Lapping Plate. Larger surface (10"x4"), 120 grit, suppoesedly has a different nickel bonding system for the diamond grit that allows it to survive lapping of really hard stones (translucent arkies and such).

Just some food for though, let us know what you end up getting.
The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.

Yeah, the DMT 325 is quite indispensable. SRD will shoot you one fast and reasonable!

How does it compare to an atoma 400g?
Bread and water can so easily become tea and toast

Atomas are much better at lapping than dmts. I own and have used both. And better I mean faster, and they dont stick to hard stones like the dmts can. I used both of them under running water.
