I understand your curiosity to remove the stone from the base, but, like the others, recommend against it. At best, you'll have a stone inferior to the coti, at worst you'll render them both useless.
The reason the coti's on the top, is cause it's better than what's on the bottom.
Having said all that, of the three BBWs I have, I really like two of them. Don't know why, but I do.
Ahhh,,,, but the temptation will be too much for Dennis & we will soon see if the Classified section is flooded with coticule slurry stones,,,,,,,, ;)

But personally I can't keep my stones glued inside those boxes. :)
That foible of yours worked out well for me though frankie. I prefer to rest my hone on a table so a base gives me extra height, perhaps if and when i get more proficient i might prefer to hold my hone in my hand. Baseless hones would be more compact to store, but in my opinion may be more prone to damage.
