Be carefull removing that coticule from the block, its not as hard as a PHIG & coticules fracture very easily. If you can clean it on the base & see the sides & the sides are consistant down to the base, same stone & not mounted to another piece, ,,, then I would leave it as is.

Nice. I like etsy for that reason. I mean 70 is a fair price if not on the cheap side. I have a nice combo coticle but I never use the bbw side. It's just to slow in my opinion when compared to just raising a slurry on the coti and honing and diluting every so often. My coti is definitely the work horse of my progression. Etsy has some good stuff and sometimes the people selling it don't know what they have and offer it for cheap.

I was thinking of belt sanding the sides to the stone so I can get a better view of the underside then saw most of the bottom wood off then belt sand it off...seemed safest

I just took a better look at photo # 2,,,, sorry I did not before my first post. If that was my coticule, I would definitely leave it attached to the base,,,,just clean it & use it.

It's your stone,,, but that second layer is meant to stabilize the yellow coticule,,, your playing with fire putting it on a belt sander, regardless of how skilled you are,,,,that stone could be 100 years old.

True enough, I'll take your advice and leave it as is, never played with a bbw so only reason I wanted it out.

There's a reason they used it to back the coticule. I mean you could use it to fill in the roll of a 4th but your coti can do that too and much faster.

It's variable. Some BBW are fast and better than some coticule (old BBW, new coticules), even if it's not the majority.

BBW can be good for finishing knives, if you want to keep the coticule side for your razors. But Hirlau is right, it's easy to crack those stones, be careful.
