I usually sit down with the stone and put it through a short interview......

    Where did you come from?

    How old are you?

    What is your experience?

    How often do you bathe?

    Do you have any irregularities?

What did your Mother and Father look like?

Eventually, based on a further line of questions, I make my best guess.........

    Have fun.

I would say, the the flatness of the edges of the stone. The smoother, the stone is shaped, the more likely it is a man made. If there are no cutting marks, broken corners etc. Generally, when we are talking about man made stones, we are referring to the 1$ coarse ones, most of them double sided. The bigger size of particles is visible somewhere in most of them.
Their size is also an indicator. The 8x2 or 6x2" are very usual for them, as for most naturals too, but a 10x3" or stones narrower than 2" (excluding the scythe or chisel stones) are rare.

You just need to be careful cause sometimes rocks lie. You know like fools gold and herkimer diamonds and water sapphire. They be dirty critters and all that time they spend in in dirt and mud and slime and all those unsavory places can give them a bad personality.

You just have to break em to get them to tell you the truth.
