Default How to lap a Jnat

I have a Jnat that needs lapping. Is there a good video or written tutorial out there? Also, what should I use as a lapping material?

A good diamond plate will do the job fine. I'm using my well worn D8C for both lapping & slurry starting & it works well. Many are also using the Atoma plates w/ good results. The main thing is you want to remove that microns-thin layer of oxidation on the surface & get to the good stuff (fresh stone). As far as technique, lap just like you would any other stone, but back off on the pressure once you get to the end.

Some will tell you that you then have to smooth the surface w/ another natural afterwards, but I wouldn't worry about it too much. IME w/ several Jnats, as long as the diamond plate is good quality & well broken in & toward the end you use only the weight of the plate on the stone, the surface of the stone should be just fine. You can always experiment later if you want.

Depends on what Jnat you have. Diamond plate is your best bet, but that is not enough. After you flatten on 320 or 200 you should go higher in grit, at least 1000, for a finishing stone. If is a lower grit stone, is enough 200 grit.

I flattened mine with wet dry paper on a granite tile. Just liked the fact that the whole stone was in contact at the same time.

The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.
