Thread: Quartz in suji

Hi guys! In mine Janat there is a quartz ( in suji ). What to do with a stone?

I had the impression that quartz does not appear in Jnats. But if it's white or transparent, I guess it could be one. And like all the hard inclusions, it needs to be removed.
Use something hard and try to scratch it until it does not come in contact with your blades, hoping that it won't be releasing particles in the future. And, if you're lucky, it might not go deeper, and by removing it, you'll be fine.
If it's a stone you have recently bought, without you knowing of this inclusion, I would strongly advise you to return it as soon as possible.

I wouldn't be doing anything unless I was SURE it was quartz. There are so many white minerals out there it would make your head spin.

does it scratch the bevels? or chip the edge? If not then it is not a problem, if yes you can try and dig it out.

The stone doesn't do scratches or a chip on an edge

It has golden gloss. Who knows, what except quartz can give gloss?

There is an old rule for Jnats; if the inclusion shines-reflects light, then it's toxic. And I'm not referring to the shining ones that become this way after honing, from polishing, those are softer ones.
The stones that had this kind of inclusion never reached the selves of shops in Japan, and are most likely collected from places around the mine.
There is also the possibility that the inclusion appeared after lapping, still, be careful.

Perhaps they aren't present in shops of Japan. But they are used.

Now you're making me search for old articles, take a look at this An Object Lesson in Japanese Hones: Part II | Eastern Smooth: The Blog , and, read from Jim's blog, it's extremely interesting. But he stopped updating his blog a few hears now, I wish he and his family are doing very well.

About that ohira stone, yes, stones with toxic lines could be sold, but they were a lot cheaper compared to a sujinashi or how they are called, making it a cheaper choice. And, in his case, it's just a line. If a stone has more than one of those inclusions, that stone would be useless. And you can do the same with this gentleman.
