The 3K will work in lieu of the 5K, but in my opinion, the results are not any different. As was stated, you can't go wrong with either and the 3/8K combo is very good.

    Have fun.
Really appreciate it when Lynn chimes in.

I just bit the bullet and bought the rest of my hones. Should get them next week. 1000, DMT 325 (already bought those 2) 5000, 8000 and 12000. Might try and get a 3000 next month like Glen said.

    Red,
I am excited for you! Buying new stones and awaiting their arrival is great fun. Developing sharpening skills is a capability greatly respected worldwide.

That was the setup that I started with per Lynn's direction on his videos for honing basics. The jump between 1000 and 5000 is not that big. Sure, a 3000 would be great in there but not crucial. And that 12000 is a very nice finisher for synthetics. As I have written before here, if it's good enough for Lynn Abrams ....... you get the idea.

    Best of luck,

    Frank

Thanks Frank. I will eventually get a 3000 as well. I figure if I do what Lynn and Glen say I can't go wrong with the equipment side. I will still send all my favorites to Glen so I don't screw anything up, plus I have never had anyone give me a razor that shaved as well as his. No shot at anyone else... I guess it's like coffee, just a preference.

And... Voidmaster (with the help of 10pups) was generous enough to offer me some personal lessons so hopefully in a couple of months I will be better suited to get a nice edge.
