Pike Beljen hone
Is there anything special about the Pike's Beljen hone or any other coticule the same size or is it just a branded coticule?
I guess the box could be special.
Thanks, Dave

I've had a couple of Pike coticules and they were good. As has been pointed out in the past, coticules are metamorphic rocks formed a million years ago give or take a few. When they were dug out of the ground should be inconsequential. OTOH, there were more mines back then, more veins to cull through. So it may have been that 'select' was better in the old days than it is today.
Thinking about it though, you wonder if the best coticule vein is yet to be tapped ? A possibility. I've been through quite a few vintage cotis, and a few mined within the last few years. I really liked some of both vintages and didn't like others. IME all you can do is give it a try and see which of the chocolates you got out of the box.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

So are you saying it is probably a select that has been cut to fit the box?

If you mean the one that is for sale at the bay at the moment - this is not a coticule, maybe even not a natural hone. If you read the label it says: "A fast cutting hone which gives an edge equal to the natural belgian."
I think that's also the reason why its named beljen and not belgian hone.

Thanked: 4826There were a series of hones made from the bits of coticule or cuticle grinding and bound together to made an artificial coticule. Looking at the really bad pictures it is possible but at this point I have to emphasize possible, Pike did have some but I don't know which ones.

Thanked: 580I have one. Definitely a synthetic. I picked it up hoping the same thing, that it was a coticule.
