Default Just thinking out loud and ahead

This is something that will be some time away but i was just sitting watching a movie and started thinking about finishing hones. Currently i have a few Welsh slate hones and while i am not unhappy with the finish i got from these i cant help thinking what if, I remember reading that slate can be a little on the varied side and i was thinking about maybe looking at something more predictable like a Naniwa SS or Shapton GS.

So im not really asking "should i choose this or that" what im really asking is do you guys think i would benefit from experiencing a synthetic stones?

I know that a lot of natural hones provide excellent finishes, but I really like the idea of a consistant result no matter what. I recently bought a 12k Nani and have been very pleased. Still looking at the 20k Goko but haven't pulled the trigger yet... maybe I will get lucky for christmas

Experience is always beneficial. Unfortunately the experience often requires a purchase. If you are "not unhappy" with your current edges, then you might want to leave well enough alone.

You are right that synthetics are more predictable but that does not mean that they are better. You can fall down a deep rabbit hole looking for a slightly better hone and resulting edge. On the other hand, if you are curious and can afford it, then experiment away!

So what your saying is that christmas is coming around and i should not settle for just the naniwa or shapton but also try out a spot of belgian too
but joking aside, that some pretty solid advice.

    thanks

Alternatively, you can arrange for a meet-up and invite everyone to bring their hones!

I like this idea, but i fear the amount of beer involved would result in some poorly honed razors, some bloodied faces and generally not a lot of honing. After all, whats an open invite meet up without beer...

Razors can be re-honed. Faces look manly with a few scars.

Bring on the beer and the hones!

Meet-ups are always a great idea.
