Help needed - Coticule dragging
Hi gents.
I got this week directly from Ardennes a Coticule bout 10 Standard.
I lapped it with DMT 360, chanfered the corners and I was good to go.
I tried several razors, with and without slurry, and had a weird feedback from the Coticule: a tremendous amount of draw, I mean, it didn't drag freely along the hone, it was difficult to guide it throughout the entire hone, I had to push it along almost the entire length.
I lapped it again and it's the same: it feels like rubber.
Is this normal? Of course not...
What are your thoughts? Thanks.

Try flipping the hone end for end. I have more than one that responds differently to the direction of stroke.
Don't make sense but...It is a natural product.
Give it a try.

You also might try lapping it against another coticule, or try a finer grit sand paper on a counter top or a tile. 600 - 1000 grit. I have never done either, but I know there are some who report that they do.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 3215I lapped a Special Stone the other day with a DMT 8C and chamfered the edges as one side had a large, chip (about 3/16 th).
I noticed when I put a razor on it, that it felt rough, not quite as you described, but not smooth, so I lapped the face with a 1200K DMT and it was better, but still rough.
I ran my thumb nail across the stone face and it was smooth, when I ran my thumb nail on the corner of the chamfer, I felt the stria from the 325 plate. Looking at it with a loupe confirmed the stria and chipping on the face corner of the chamfer.
I re-chamfered with the 1200 and ended up rounding over the corner to about a ΒΌ in radius so it was smooth. That solved the problem, it is a nice stone, capable of polishing out 12K super stone stria from the bevel.
Take a look at it with a loupe.

The stone surface is smooth after lapping with DMT. I can try lapping with my Naniwa 1k and see if the blade starts to glide as it should.
Thanks for your opinions, gents!
