Default My New Coticules - Hybrid and Unknown

My new cotis, The Les Lat Hybrid from the Ol Preau quarry with slurry. Also my stone from Jarrod @ TSS, not sure on vein. It came with an interesting slurry stone though.

I particularly like the first stone. Congrats and thanks for sharing. Love the pics.

I just refreshed the edge on an old 8/8 W&B For Barbers Use(Super hollow version). This was using the hybrid side on pretty much pure water.

After linen and leather it is passing HHT almost the best i've ever seen. I'm excited for the shave!

Gorgeous stones. I'd comment more about that stunning hybrid, but I have to go wipe the saliva off my keyboard before it short circuits...

The two stones make a great pair!

The square one is really fast, and a fair bit coarser than the hybrid. It does a good job cleaning up 1k scratches before the hybrid gets used.

The cream side of the hybrid is very smooth and fine, leaves a great finish. Slurry darkens after a few laps, so it's not overly slow either.

The hybrid side works great with pure water, but a slurry has a unique feel that I will have to do more tests with!

The hybrid edges shave much keener, from either side than the rectangular stone. The regular coticule could easily be shaved off of, but I think it will function as more of a mid range workhorse for me. .

I also like the hybrid les latneuses a lot,.. but,.. I hope for your sake it is already completely flat caus damn,.. mine was a lot of work lapping, if you have to do some lapping on it I would recommend high quality Silicium Carbide paper with a grid of 500 ~ 1000, the stone is so increbibly hard that a coarser grid seems to be unable to cut into the stone, and so, lapping seems to go even slower on a coarse grid...

edit; it might just be my imagination but at least slurry got created on the wet&dry within 5 minutes on the higher grid

My expertise w/ cotis are in how to fail in using them well. I'm able to get edges sharp with them, but I've only gotten a few that would rival my other stones. I tried w/ about 200 blades. I still use, but not for finishing.

The 'square' one. I'd like to say its a Petite Blanch, but I can't do so with confidence. If my monitor renders the reddish/orange color accurately, it definitely follows that its a FAST cutter. There are a few guys that can make a fine finish with them, but I'm certainly not one of them. You may find that after a bevel set, its all you need for everything but your finisher of choice - which might well be your Les Lat.

Enjoy. May you do way better than I with them.

Many of us have expertise in not getting as good of an edge as we expect!!

I don't love most of the new coticules, but I've found some old duds, too. The only coticule I ever really liked is one that I bought from someone on here who goes by disburden. I don't use coticules any longer, and that one cost me 3 bills. It is worth every penny of it, but because of every dud coticule out there, I have little chance of getting that money back. The reputation gets attached to mine.

Someone gave me a deep rock stone 5 x 2 1/2 that is unused, too. Neat looking stone, substandard edges compared to my other stones.

That's too bad. I'm more of a Jnat man myself, but I get great edges off either of the coticules above. Even the really fast cutting one.

Obviously both sides of the Les Lat are a bit keener than the new stone I got, but the edges with plain water on the new one are plenty passable and quite comfortable. Even with any combination of slurry stone(I have a few different types)

The hybrid side is just amazing though, was worth every penny I spent on it

I hope that one day, someone darkens my doorstep and accidentally drops a well packed and fairly large hybrid coticule.
