As the title says. Let's see what everyone's opinion is. Yes, your opinion. Some people enjoy an 8k shave. Others do not. As with most things YMMV but let's pretend that there is nothing better than a norton 8k. Would you be HAPPY shaving with this edge and this edge only.
Depends. 8k JIS or 8k mesh? I just shaved off of an Atoma 400 the other day.
This poll is useless and simply is an extension of a discussion in another thread.
The reason it is useless is because it does not take into account who used the 8k to produce the edge.
One must learn to max out at the 8k level, without this approach, going to a finer stone will yield inappreciable results.

The purpose of shaving off of the 4/8 first is to know for sure you have gotten the razor to a level of sharp and smooth that is enough to justify going to a higher grit stone. Thanks to Randydance for giving me the tip. Upon shaving at the 8k level, many times, I've found that I could get along fine if that was the highest grit hone I had. YMMV.

These boards are full of people who have experienced, first hand, that a proper hone job on a Norton 8K will yield a pretty decent shave.
I've done it myself on many a razor.
You wouldn't have to search these boards for very long to see that many of us have moved to even finer grits on our razors, but that does not mean a shave can't be had quite comfortably off the Norton.
But not all, I'm sure to some it simply isn't enough..
I finish my razors on 12k chinese hone and usually do 2 to 3 hundred strokes on the strop. There absolutely has to be no tugging feeling whatsoever when i go ATG!

All of dickerydee's posts show he is a troll, so he has been banned. We certainly know who he is, his past history on SRP is still here from the day he came on the forum looking for help with his ebay purchase, through learning about hones and honing all the way until he was banned. Just like his equally prolific history on his subsequent shaving forum where he doesn't post in the same style as he did here over the past day, or he'd be banned as well.Quote:
