It looks like swarf (metal particulate) to me.

Yeah, it looks like swarf. I have seen build up like this on rougher hones.

Did you lap it before you used it to make sure it is flat and smooth? What was it lapped with?
May your lather be moist and slick, the sweep of your razor sure, and your edge always keen!

In addition, did you lap it after you honed whatever it was ? Lapping should clean that up, unless it is a fault in the mix.

Dunno, if whatever it is doesn't come out with lapping, maybe it is an imperfection in the hone .......... OR ........ what grit diamond plate ? If it is higher than 325 you may be getting the diamonds/nickel coming off in the waterstone. DMT warns about that, and it happened to me when I lapped with a 1200. My norton was getting gray. Fortunately for me Sham posted about ruining his 1200, so I stopped before I ruined my plate.

Are you using soap with water?

I put a drop of Dawn dish soap on my Norton 4k and it left a half inch mark and a rough spot. It does not affect the honing, but I can feel it when the razor glides over it, but it does not affect the edge. It has been like that for a couple of years now.

If it does not affect the edge, or you can not feel it, I would not worry about it.

    Couldn't have said it better.
