Thread: "NEW" Thuringians

Has anyone purchased or had any experience with the "New" Thuringian hones sold thru Timber Tools? They claim that they are from the same site as the original Eschers but new production.

I have no personal experience with them but I think I remember others describing them in the past as not being up to snuff with Eschers.

Everything I've seen is that they really aren't up to par. Some are genuine thuringian hones (I believe the ones marketed as eschers) but they are not nearly as fine.

This is all old rumor, but I think this got started when the vendor in question has apparently sourced a single good sized piece of real Thuringian stone from somewhere, maybe the mine tailings. Those stones have been sold off over a year ago and were quite expensive. The vendor also has a line of kind of Thuringians which are not as well thought of, IOW, they're nothing special.

I can add that it seems to be vintage Material when it comes to the smaller sized hones in Celebrated Water Razor Hone Size. So were talking about types of thuringian Water Hones.

I bought one a few years ago. They sucks for razors fine for woodworking tools

I also bought one from Timber Tools and don't waste your money. Not for razors.

No good. Buy them straight out of europe for about $35 if you want to play with one. They are coarse slate hones that don't look or feel like eschers. I'd put the one I have somewhere in the 2k grit range, especially slurried.

(I would assume they are variable, but I'd expect - having good finishers in hand already - that most of them are going to be a prefinisher for a good finisher, and they should be regarded as such price-wise in my opinion. It's easy to find slurrying pre finishers - like jnats - for $60 or so. Anything to me that's over that needs to be confirmed to be a good stone).
