Size: 34.8 KBcan anyone help me with info on this barber hone?
when i got it it was quite chipped and a bit manky, along with being fairly heavily pock marked, I have bevelled the edges and lapped it with an Atoma 400 grit plate. The surface looks pretty good now, it appears to have metallic flecks in it but I cant really be sure.

Thanks in advance for any help received

Lets see if I can get things going :<0) I have bought a few barbers hones. Most 2 sided but a coupe single sided. As I recall they are a lot like razors from the barber supply era. Few companies made them but they put others names on them. I have some evidence of that with American Hone Co. where they have their logo on the hone also. And the funny thing is,, they are all about the same color brown. Then I have some Carborundums the same way in grey colors. So I am guessing ,unless there is a certain company that ran with the BEST logo, you may have an American hone.

Now more will come and rebut that :<0)

i imagine you are right, its only a case of pressing a logo in/ having a mould made with your logo on, and the abrasive could be anything I suppose, it seems to work ok, but not as well as a 10 or 12k nani, though that might just be me, i have it for my work razor so that i dont have to keep my good hones here, i also have an assortment of pasted strops that i have either made or been given.

I lapped both sides and it seems to be the same all of the way through, or at least both sides are the same.

There were a few makers but the list is short. Randydance and Modine have very large collections and are seriously in the know when it comes to which one is high grit and which one is low. Modine actually post quite a bit of research on another site about barbers hones. American Hone Company made lots and lots and put a ton of names on them.

Here is a summary of what Modine told me:
most likely AM (presumably short form of american) hone co.
    silicon carbide abrasive
    4-6k
best used with a thick lather of some description.

Thanks to those of you who input.
