    Default Different looking coticule

Any ideas on this coticule? I've never seen one that looks like this. Obviously vintage.

Is it over there or over yonder?

Well, a natural two layer coticule is cut from the junction of two veins. I guess this one simply was from three proximal veins. That's really cool!

Never seen anything just like it, but I have seen a La Petite Blanche that was eggplant colored. BBW is found naturally next to coticule veins. I'm guessing this probably just BBW on both sides where the coticule vein was just so thin they decided to not process it down to pure yellow coticule. I agree, it's cool

I know, right! I am guessing the purplish layer is the BBW, and yellow is the actual coticule layer.... I wonder wonder the darker top layer is?

coticules are sandwiched between BBW (usually in vertical veins) and they are extracted together. I'm guessing it's just BBW

You can see the vein of coticule sandwiched here. Kinda cool I think

Wow.... That is pretty neat! Lots of lapping and cutting on some hones to get to the yellow parts then. So this hone in question is pretty much a BBW on both sides and the most desired part is sandwiched. Lots of lapping to use the yellow then. Not worth getting to use for razor honing but would be a nice hone in someone's collection. It's sure different looking tho.

Nice looking stone - coticules have an amazing array of types.

I have a BBW that was selected for me by Rob (of Ardennes Coticule) quite a few years ago. It is about 10 inches long, 3 inches wide and 3/4 of an inch thick.

It is spotted like your one, Willisf, in the top right corner - no light yellow haze, just loads of tiny, well defined yellow dots.

It is a fast cutter and seemingly not much lower in grit estimation than most coticles (8 - 10k). I would say it cuts like a 7k stone. It is not quite as quick as a yellow coticule, but is all you need for leather knives and other similar sharp implements.

    Regards,
    Neil
