Thanked: 03M lapping film to lap Jnat, coticule and naniwa
I have a fair amount of lapping film from 600 to 8000 grit equivalent, it can obviously be used to lap some material! like fiber optic, or sharpen razors.
Are they good to lap stones; jNAT, coticule or whetstones like the naniwa SS?
More a curiosity as I have a DMT on the way, but was thinking to polish better my Jnat/coti with it

I tried the 8k equivalent lapping film as a nagura to see if I could make fine Jnat slurry, but believe the diamonds came off. Give it a try and let us know what you find out.
Cheers, Steve

Thanked: 0also it is mentioned to use another natural stone to complete the lapping process, does it have to be jnat or let say a c12k could be used?

Thanked: 3215Are you lapping to get the stone flat or just for maintenance and slurry?
If you are flattening you really need a much lower grit in the 140-320 grit range to flatten.
Once flat you can smooth in the 600 to 1k range. A 600 grit plate is good for slurring stones.
Sandpaper works to smooth a stone face as would film, I would imagine, it is just a pain to use for maintenance.

Thanked: 0Yes just to get the stone flat (I have a slurry stone), but in many reading they mention after sandpaper to use another stone to complete the lapping process, I was wondering if the C12k would be a good candidate as I have no other Jnat. Guess I could use the slurry stone.
yes that is the part I am unsure, but will stick to sandpaper for the time being
thks guys

Thanked: 3215I finish lap my 12K with a 300 grit plate with fine results.
I did lap my 20K GS with a 1& 4K post 140 and 300 plates, though it is probably more that needed.
I refresh with a translucent ark slip.
For most synthetic stones, smoothing with a 300 plate is plenty, with the Jnat I smooth with a 600 plate, then maintain with the Naurgas.
I have never used the Diamond film, just the AO film with no problems. Same with Wet and Dry, it works well, just a pain to use as opposed to Diamond plates for lapping.
