help me out guys , you know who you are Ron , Randy , and all you hone enthusiasts , a friend brought this over to me and said here take it your a razor nut. well I don't even hone , so my limited experience left me asking this should I just give it back or keep it ? is it one of the hones worth having? I,m familiar with the Swatys and have one , but this one I don't know .. the surface is very much like the Swaty I have so chime in let me know what I don't know guys thanks tc

Use it in exactly the same manner as a Swaty. If you already have a Swaty, then you really don't need this one. Just as Swatys can vary, so can the Aloxites, but to my recollection (and it's been quite a while since I honed on one) it produced a comparable edge.

I will pull a couple out later tonight and compare their edges to some Swatys.

I got to tell you Ron, I have a Swaty but I have not put a blade to it,, long time ago in a buying frenzy I got it along with some hones ,, just found that I,m happy with the edges I get from you guys who know how to hone and I don't damage my blades stropping so the pro honing works real good for me, I just don't want to send it back if it might have a use down the road , that mountain man up in Idaho keeps telling me I can do this! let me knowm how yours work out thanks tc

Come on! You have GOT to give it a try! The next time that you notice that a razor is not shaving as well as you remember it--that is, any diminishment in the quality of the shave, take out that Swaty.

Just wet it and touch a bit of lather or soap to the wet hone. Rub the lightly soaped water around the hone and then take 5 light x-strokes on the hone. That's it. Strop and shave and see what it does.

+1 on what Utopian says. You got the stuff, you got to try it out. What if we all die from a meteor strike and your left with a dull razor ?
I tried mine just for that reason. I got it to make a carborundum progression. Wolfpack told me I needed a (101a for everything) and I got a 106 for some quick heavy work. Then along comes the Aloxite for a finisher. I don't use it much but I used the other 2 this weekend to fix some geometry on a few blades. Carborundum,,,,,,good stuff.

P.S. Don't ruin a DMT trying to lap Carborundum hones :<0)

Don't know any particulars regarding your wife's condition but I hope it works out. A meet-up will definitely help with any honing issues and I gladly will attend if you host one next year.

I was half-way tempted to try to arrange to hitch a ride with Gonzo to the KY meet-up next month but Randy had to go and arrange a MN meet-up at a distillery in St Paul the same weekend. I'll have to meet you some other time!

I highly encourage you to try the barber hone route. I've told this story many times before but here goes again...

I started out with just a Swaty and a Carborundum 102. This was several years before finding SRP so I had no idea what I was doing. Luckily I did happen to luck into two of the best barber hones. Anyway, they were what I used to hone my first razors. Eventually I got them to shave. After I found SRP, I started experimenting with a LOT of other hones, but I continued to maintain a 7 day set of razors with nothing but the barber hones for over 10 years. They shaved just fine. They might not have been quite as good as the edges off of my better hones but they truly did still shave just fine after 10 years.

A barber hone is all that you need to maintain your razor.

Ron's story is almost identical to mine. In the mid 60s I began with a Carborundum 118S and a Three Line Swaty Barber hone with which I struggled for years until I discovered the internet and SRP. That adds up to at least a 40 year struggle however I did get many decent shaves if only by accident. Glad that's over with.
