Thanked: 3795IF you know what you are doing, you can set a bevel and fully sharpen and finish a normal razor with just that hone. Its strength though is as a maintenance hone. Grit size is borderline irrelevant in these as it is only part of the equation.
Like other hones, how you use it determines what it does for you. They simply excel for maintenance if you use just a few (4-6) light strokes whenever you notice a good shaver shaving not so good.
If the edge was in decent shape to start with, that hone will yield a perfectly good shave. It ain't an Escher or a fine Japanese hone's edge, but it will be a perfectly shave-able edge

Note that if your razor was honed with a layer of tape (by someone...) and you use a barbers hone without taping the spine...you are now - as my flight instructor used to say when referring to flying in to known icing conditions in a plane not equipped for such.."a test pilot"
IMHO the best way to learn how to hone is to learn how to maintain...so you have the right idea.
