Keep in mind that barber hones are used to maintain an already shaving edge,,, when the razor starts to pull or tug a bit,,, then the barber hone brings it back to a comfortable edge with a minimum of strokes.

If you are trying to use a barber hone to bring the edge to shave ready for the first time,,,, post anything under a good 4K edge,,,, then you have your work cut out for you. You can try to improve over an 8K,,,, but there are few barber hones out there that will do that.

Keep in mind when honing with the barber hone in your palm,, that, "One stroke of an angle too high, kiss your shave ready edge goodbye."

Note that if your razor was honed with a layer of tape (by someone...) and you use a barbers hone without taping the spine...you are now - as my flight instructor used to say when referring to flying in to known icing conditions in a plane not equipped for such.."a test pilot"

IMHO the best way to learn how to hone is to learn how to maintain...so you have the right idea.

    Smooth shaving...

I wouldn't get too caught up with the HHT just test shave it and see how it is. Barbers used these for decades to keep their edges good. I am still learning mine, and it certainly doesn't seem as keen as a 12k (not really surprising considering they aren't 12k )

IF you know what you are doing, you can set a bevel and fully sharpen and finish a normal razor with just that hone. Its strength though is as a maintenance hone. Grit size is borderline irrelevant in these as it is only part of the equation.

Like other hones, how you use it determines what it does for you. They simply excel for maintenance if you use just a few (4-6) light strokes whenever you notice a good shaver shaving not so good.

If the edge was in decent shape to start with, that hone will yield a perfectly good shave. It ain't an Escher or a fine Japanese hone's edge, but it will be a perfectly shave-able edge
