Thread: Deal or no deal

There is a online German company that I found which has Thuringian water stones for roughly at the current exchange rate of $70 for a 180 mm x 50 mm sized stone with slurry stone shipped to the US insured.

Now that said............most Thury's I have seen on E-bay and one other site go for in excess of $100 and much more. Is it possible to get a great Thury for this price being bought direct from overseas rather than those imported by dealers here in the US and they jack prices up a bit????

I may have to purchase one and what are or am I really out of $70 and may just get a great Thury for half the price I have seen used ones sell for.

Input welcome and as usual I know one can say............well it may be a inferior stone or not of the same class as a 100 year old one but then again, it may be as good or better.

"Dealers" are not jacking up the price of that hone. If it is the one that has been discussed many times before, there is a reason why they are relatively cheaper. We don't do valuations here but the quality of that thuringian is not as good as...

But then again, it probably won't be.

I should add that I own one, have tried two others, and have gotten feedback from a few others. I don't know of anyone who would recommend them. Maybe you will be lucky and get a better one.

It may be just fine. Then again experience level would make a better determination, you've only been doing this long enough to just get a decent shave , so It might not make any difference at all for you , myself with the best hone in hand can't get a decent enough edge to tell the difference, not enough time on the hones, now someone like Utopian can tell the difference. are they advertising them as really fine razor finishers? There are plenty of slate hones coming out of germany that aren't very fine.

There is only one seller offering "Vintage" ones which i could confirm on testing. And these are not sold in size 180 x 50mm ;-)

And yes there would have been a chance to get a vintage one for a good price....you should have read you thru the board or start a thread how to come around on some good vintage stones.

However please report back your findings and add pictures that we all know talking about which stone.
